When I first moved to Canada, “tax residency” was one of the most confusing and scary terms I “found.” It’s a complex topic, and it’s the most important one to get right.
As a newcomer, I’ve learned that you should never take this advice from a blog (even this one!). The only source of truth is the Canada Revenue Agency (C.R.A.).
My job isn’t to explain the law—it’s to find the official, safe links for you.

Official C.R.A. Form: Form NR73 (Determination of Residency Status)
This is not a scary “audit” form. It’s a free, helpful tool you can use to ask the C.R.A. for an official, written ruling on your status. This is the best way to get peace of mind. Click here to find Form NR73.
